With the gradual growth of the global population and people’s fondness for wood products, forestry resources, like other mineral resources, have become scarce. Their slow regeneration rate cannot keep pace with the speed of logging and consumption.

Where lies the future hope for the forestry industry and related wood product enterprises?

In recent years, forest certification has gained increasing recognition. As a market-based tool to promote sustainable forest management, it is also referred to as forestry certification, timber certification, or simply certification. It consists of two core components: Forest Management Certification and Chain of Custody Certification. Forest Management Certification evaluates forest management performance in accordance with established principles, standards and procedures. Chain of Custody Certification verifies the entire industrial chain of wood processing enterprises, covering log transportation, production, circulation and delivery to end consumers. Conducted by independent third-party bodies, forest certification ensures impartiality and transparency.

The primary purposes of forest certification are: first, to raise forest management standards and realize sustainable forestry development; second, to stabilize existing markets for forest products and facilitate access to new markets. In addition, forest certification encourages stakeholders to participate in forest conservation and sustainable management, promotes the commercialization of forest ecological services, helps enterprises obtain financial support, reduces investment risks, and strengthens the enforcement of relevant laws and regulations.

Up to now, various forest certification systems have been established worldwide. Although their specific procedures differ slightly, they follow the same major steps: application, inspection (audit), evaluation decision, and certificate issuance.

Currently, there are two major global forest certification systems: FSC and PEFC.

FSC, the Forest Stewardship Council, is a non-profit international organization headquartered in Bonn, Germany. Committed to promoting responsible forest management worldwide, FSC is one of the two leading global certification systems. Supported by buyer groups and the Global Forest & Trade Network, it enjoys solid market recognition. FSC-certified forests account for 23% of the global certified forest area. So far, about 60 million hectares of forests across around 60 countries have obtained FSC certification, including 430,000 hectares in China.

PEFC, the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, was initiated by European private forest owners. It endorses national certification systems across Europe and mutual recognition frameworks based on its *Technical Documents: Common Elements and Requirements*, while providing product labeling services. It currently covers the largest certified forest area worldwide. As a major regional certification system, PEFC has a strong market foundation in Europe, one of the world’s largest markets for certified timber products, accounting for 38% of global certified forest area.

Since China began participating in international sustainable forestry activities in the early 1990s, a number of forest farms nationwide have obtained forest certification. To date, approximately 150 wood product manufacturers and trading enterprises have passed Chain of Custody (CoC) certification. Especially in recent years, the number of enterprises obtaining forest certification and CoC certification has shown a substantial upward trend.

Recently, nearly 50 wood product enterprises including Xinyun Wood Industry, together with paper industry giants such as APP and UPM, have received professional FSC/PEFC certification consulting services, laying a solid foundation for their products to enter global circulation markets and procurement channels of major international buyers.
